Hedgehogs have changed little over the last 15 million years.  The name ‘hedgehog’ came into use around the year 1450, derived from Middle English. 

The hedgehog’s dilemma is based upon the apparent danger of a male hedgehog being injured from a spine while mating with a female hedgehog.  Luckily this is not a problem as the male’s penis is very near the centre of its abdomen.
